Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is serious insect pest of our native ash trees in MN. Although new to Minnesota in 2009, EAB has killed hundreds of millions ash trees in North America since 2002. Learn more at the EAB Network.

The State of Minnesota has roughly a billion ash trees. Treating ash trees with insecticides is an option to control EAB, provided it’s applied carefully and retreated on a regular basis. In the face of the pending loss of hundreds of millions of ash trees in our state alone, treating is not going to contain this pest. The only long-term solution is to plant, plant and plant. Plant so the root collar is visible after planting. And don’t forget to water. Mulch the base of the tree with wood chips. Study after study shows nothing helps a tree grow better than a nice mulching. BTW it’s a fun project to do with your grandkids. Have you ever seen a kid not have fun with a hose?
